’Final Destination 6′ Moving Forward With 'Freaks’ Directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein

Final Destination

The sixth Final Destination is alive as two directors have been found to helm the long-anticipated revival of the classic horror saga.

We had been hearing for years about a supposed relaunch of the franchise, which always found its audience and more than enough success to continue the carnage, but somehow went quiet after 2011’s Final Destination 5. At the beginning of the year, Spider-Man veteran Jon Watts boarded the project as a producer for New Line Cinema — he also wrote the treatment which served as the basis for Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor’s script (Scream relaunch and Wicked Wicked Games, respectively).

Now, The Hollywood Reporter has unveiled the directing talent behind the sixth installment in the gory franchise: Freaks (2018) filmmakers Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein. Their sci-fi thriller was one of the biggest sales at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018 and went on to top Netflix’s Top 10 list. They are also Emmy-nominated TV directors whose most recent work includes the new Fraggle Rock series for Apple.

Perhaps the most interesting (and hilarious) part of the report is the recount of how the duo ultimately landed the job:

The duo made their pitch to New Line execs and producers together, with a burning fireplace behind them. As they wrapped up the meeting, the fire came alive and the mantel began burning. The filmmakers stopped and, after a tense moment, quickly extinguished the flames. As they sat down, everyone relieved the accident had passed, a wrenching creak was heard and suddenly, the whizzing ceiling fan broke off and flew down, decapitating one of the filmmakers.

The original news stated the film was headed for HBO Max, but with the recent earth-shattering shakeups at the streamer and Warner Discovery’s renewed focus on theatrical releases, there’s a good chance Final Destination could shock audiences again on the big screen.
