’The Witcher’: Liam Hemsworth Replacing Henry Cavill
The Witcher has been renewed for a fourth season, but with a twist: going forward, Geralt of Rivia will no longer be portrayed by Henry Cavill, but Liam Hemsworth.
Netflix officially made the announcement that Cavill will hand his sword over to Hemsworth after his third and final season portraying the character. Cavill snagged the role of Geralt back in 2018, when his future as Superman was in limbo; with more Superman appearances on the horizon thanks to Black Adam, it appears that he is prioritizing a return as the Last Son of Krypton over more time hunting mythical beasts across the Continent. Cavill issued the following statement announcing his departure after the upcoming season:
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men. Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
Hemsworth responded with a statement of his own:
“As a Witcher fan, I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honored that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure. Henry, I’ve been a fan of yours for years and was inspired by what you brought to this beloved character. I may have some big boots to fill, but I’m truly excited to be stepping into The Witcher world.”
Cavill has work lined up to him once his days as the Witcher are over, as aside from an untitled Superman reboot and future appearances in other DC movies, he’s got other projects in the pipeline, such as the recently-announced Guy Ritchie film The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (which he’ll star in with Eiza González), and a proposed reboot of the Highlander franchise. For Hemsworth, this role represents his biggest involvement with a franchise since his part in The Hunger Games series, with his only other franchise-based work of note being a supporting role in The Expendables 2, a cameo as himself on The Muppets, and the ill-fated Independence Day: Resurgence.
The first two seasons of The Witcher are available to stream right now, while the third will debut in Summer 2023.
